What is the Irish Discworld Convention?
The Irish Discworld Convention (frequently called ‘IDWCon’) is a gathering of people who enjoy Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld stories. Whether you have followed the story of the Discworld from its inception or have just finished reading your first story, IDWCon allows you to meet with those involved in the creation of the Discworld, pick up souvenirs, books or memories, and share your enjoyment with other Discworld fans through meeting up and chatting, going to events and playing games. Attending a gathering of Discworld fans has been described as ‘meeting friends you didn’t know you had’.
Where is the Irish Discworld Convention being held?
Due to the popularity of our choice last time, IDWCon 2017 will be again held at the Cork International Hotel in the Cork Airport Business Park, just outside of Cork City, Ireland.
For more information on the Cork International Hotel, see here.
How do I get there?
For further details on its location, see here.
Regular buses run to the airport itself and to Cork Airport Business Park (2 minutes walk to the Cork International Hotel) from Cork’s train and bus stations in the city centre.
Fly into Cork Airport and there is a free shuttle bus to and from the hotel (or a 5 minute walk).
Who will be at this Convention shindig?
Sir Terry himself is unfortunately no longer with us; however, we are very lucky that some of his co-conspirators are attending. They can be found here.
Why attend such an amazing-sounding Convention?
The Convention is packed with fun events, such as interviews and talks with esteemed guests, competitions, quizzes, games galore and, of course, our Banquet Dinner. But the main reason to come is not just our programme, but our members. Discworld fans are, on the whole, a warm and welcoming bunch and if you’ve ever sniggered to yourself over a Discworld book you’ll feel right at home amongst them.
If that's not recommendation enough, we were also fortunate enough to win best Irish Convention of 2015 at The Arcade awards.
But I've never been to a convention before.
Then you should definitely come along. Conventions are all about inclusion and sharing your love of something with others. The committee and attendees of IDWCon are very welcoming and always glad to see new faces, be they human, dwarf, troll or even Nobby Nobbs.
Can I come on my own?
Of course! Plenty of people have turned up at a Discworld Convention alone, but they never stay that way for long. We're a friendly crowd. If you’re coming alone but want to keep costs down, you could look for roommates on our Facebook group.
Who should I talk to for help at the Convention?
The convention is run by the committee and their helpers, all of whom are volunteers and fans like yourself. They should be able to help with anything from lost items, last minute changes to the programme, or any other issue you might have. If they can't help you, they'll try to find someone who can. If you’d be interested in helping out at the convention, please let us know when buying your membership, or by emailing info@idwcon.org.
