Academic Philosophy:
Richard was dragged out of the staff room where he was quite happy drinking, and thrust into the Gaffer's incomparable shoes. Having swapped the shoes for ones that actually fit, and then "borrowed" the contents of the Gaffer's shed, Richard is hoping nobody notices that the Gaffer isn't here.
